Ship Features
The Viking Ocean ships are virtually identical, which may seem like a drawback, but it's actually a huge advantage. This means that repeat guests can immediately feel at home, regardless of which ship they're on.
The staterooms, lounges, furnishings, and color palette are all the same across all five (soon to be six) Viking ships. This consistency makes it easy for crew members to move between vessels without a learning curve.
The ship's design is logically and elegantly laid out, making it easy to navigate. Interactive touchscreen monitors deliver information to guests in a user-friendly and intuitive manner.
Ship Highlights

Our all-veranda ocean ships are truly a marvel of modern design. They feature understated elegance, giving you a sense of refinement and sophistication at sea.
Each ship is purpose-built to allow direct access into small and large ports alike, making it easy to explore new destinations.
Ancona Hull Transport
The Viking Sky's hull transport to Ancona was a significant event in her construction journey. The hull was towed from Venice to the Viking Ocean Cruises' shipyard in Ancona, Italy.
The Viking Sky's hull was guided into place next to her sister ship, the Viking Sea, at the shipyard. This strategic placement allowed for efficient construction and assembly of the ship's features.
The Viking Sky's hull transport to Ancona marked a major milestone in her development.
The Spa
The Spa on our ship is a real gem, and you'll feel like you're in a luxurious oasis as soon as you step inside. Located on Deck 1 Forward, it's easily accessible and offers a wide range of amenities.

You won't need to "check in" to use the spa, simply go to the locker room and use your stateroom key to obtain a locker for your valuables and/or clothing. Spa slippers, towels, and a bathrobe are all provided.
The fitness center is very well equipped with the latest cardio equipment and weight training machines, so you can get a great workout before or after relaxing in the spa.
A dry sauna is located in the locker room, and an adjacent cold plunge pool is perfect for cooling down after a sauna session. The coed "wet area" consists of a large thallasotherapy pool with warm, soothing jets.
The hot tub has more powerful water jets and 102 degree water, making it a great spot to unwind and relax. Luxurious cushioned loungers surround the pools, offering a comfortable place to cool down.
The steam room is just steps from the pool area, and no visit is complete without a stop in the snow grotto - a small room filled with snow!
Food and Dining
The food and drink options on Viking Sky are numerous and convenient.
You can enjoy your favorite beverage from The Viking Bar while admiring the art displayed on the huge screen at the top of the grand staircase in the Atrium on Decks 1, 2, and 3.
The Viking Sparkling Wine is one of my favorite sparkling wines, and it's a good value at $5.50.
A finger of Crown Royal will set you back $8, and it's a small finger.
If you plan on having multiple drinks per day, the Silver Spirits package is a good value, offering unlimited cocktails, beer, wine, and soft drinks for about $30 per day per person.
Stateroom Features
Our staterooms are designed to provide the ultimate travel experience. They come in a variety of sizes, with the smallest being 270 sq ft, including a private veranda.
You can choose from different types of staterooms, including Veranda Staterooms, Deluxe Veranda Staterooms, and Explorer Suites. Each one offers a unique set of amenities and perks.
One of the best things about our staterooms is the ocean-view floor-to-ceiling sliding glass door that opens up to a full-size veranda. This is a great way to take in the breathtaking views of the ocean while still having the comfort of your own private space.
You'll also have access to a king-size Viking Explorer Bed, which can be configured as a twin bed if needed. The bed comes with luxury linens and pillows for a comfortable night's sleep.
In terms of technology, our staterooms are equipped with free Wi-Fi, a 42" flat-screen TV, and 110/220 volt outlets and USB ports. You'll also have a direct-dial satellite phone and cell service for staying connected.
The bathroom is a highlight of the stateroom, with a spacious glass-enclosed shower, heated floor, anti-fog mirror, and hair dryer. You'll also have premium Freyja toiletries, plush robes and slippers, and a security safe.
Here are some key features of our staterooms:
You'll also have access to a stateroom steward and twice-daily housekeeping, as well as 24-hour room service. And, of course, you'll have under-bed suitcase storage space and spacious drawers and a closet with wooden hangers.
Cruise Experience
A cruise aboard Viking Sky is a casual experience, so leave your tuxedos at home. You can bring a sport coat if you wish, but you probably won't even need that.
The entire ship is very relaxed and casual, making a collared shirt and a nice pair of slacks suitable attire after 6pm anywhere on the ship.
Gratuities will be added to your shipboard account at the end of the cruise, $12 per person per day, but can be adjusted with a trip to Guest Services.
Into the Midnight Sun
Our 14-night cruise through the Midnight Sun was an unforgettable experience. We started in Bergen, Norway, and ended in Greenwich, England, a journey that allowed us to witness the breathtaking beauty of the Norwegian fjords and the Orkneys.
Viking Cruises offers this itinerary on five dates in 2019 and five in 2020, making it a unique opportunity to explore this region. The last sailing of the season was on July 20th, which meant that some of the waterfalls in the fjords were not as impressive as they might have been earlier in the season.
However, the warmer temperatures on our cruise were a pleasant surprise, and the weather was actually quite pleasant. The pleasant weather and scenic views made for a memorable experience.
Each night in our cabin was comfortable, thanks to the two nightstands that also had US-style 110 outlets and two USB charging ports. This was a thoughtful touch by Viking, allowing us to keep our devices charged throughout the night.
The Viking Bar on Deck 1 was a great spot to relax and unwind after a long day of exploring.
Shore Excursions
Shore excursions on a cruise can be a highlight of the trip, and Viking Cruises does it well. They offer an included excursion in every port, which is a huge value.
You can pre-book these excursions online through the MyVikingJourney website, and they'll even send you your excursion tickets to pick up in your stateroom upon embarkation.
The included excursions are quite good, with competent local guides. We found them to be a great way to experience the local culture and attractions.

Viking also provides Quietvox audio systems for use on local excursions, which are a game-changer for group tours. They allow you to hear the guide clearly without having to strain your ears.
One of the benefits of Viking's shore excursion operation is the flexibility to book excursions at various times of the day. Many excursions are offered both in the morning and the afternoon, so you can sleep in, have lunch, and then go on excursion.
Viking even provides complimentary local shuttle service to town in many of the ports we visited, making it easy to get around and explore on your own.
The Experience
A Viking cruise is a casual affair, so leave your tuxedo at home and dress in a collared shirt and nice slacks after 6pm.
The entire ship is very relaxed and casual, so you won't need a sport coat unless you want to.
The average age on our cruise was in the 50-60 range, so this is a cruise line for adults.

If you're looking to take the kiddos on a cruise, look elsewhere.
Gratuities will be added to your shipboard account at the end of the cruise, but can be adjusted with a visit to Guest Services ($12 pp/pd).
Wine, beer, and soft drinks are included at lunch and dinner, and even the soft drinks in the mini-bar in your stateroom are complimentary and replenished once each day.
Complimentary shuttle service and included excursions make a Viking Cruise a considerable value.
Ship Information
The Viking Sky cruise line has a unique approach to ship design, with all five (soon to be six) ships being virtually identical. This means that every stateroom, lounge, and even the color palette is the same across all the ships.
The Viking Ocean ships are some of the most logically and elegantly designed ships on the market, with a focus on Scandinavian design principles. Interactive touchscreen monitors are used throughout the ship to deliver information to guests in a user-friendly and intuitive manner.
Here are some key statistics about the Viking Sky ship:
Christening
The Viking Sky was christened on June 22, 2017, in Tromsø, Norway.
Tromsø is a popular destination for viewing the Northern Lights, and it's also a key port of call on Viking Ocean Cruises' Into the Midnight Sun itinerary.
The Viking Sky is the third elegant sister ship in Viking Ocean Cruises' ocean fleet.

Ship Stats
The Viking Sky is a large ship, built in 2016 with a total of 9 decks.
It has a gross tonnage of 47,800 tons and measures 745 feet in length. The ship's beam is 94 feet, which is quite wide.
Here's a breakdown of the ship's stats:
The ship has a total of 464 cabins, which can accommodate up to 928 passengers. With a crew of 465, the ship is well-staffed to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for its passengers.
Cruise Ship Tracking
Cruise ships can be tracked in real-time using AIS (automatic identification system), which relies on transceivers on ships to report their location live.

The accuracy of this tracking depends on the ship's proximity to a station that can pick up the signal, which isn't always possible.
In fact, ships may be outside of range from a station that can receive the signal, making tracking less reliable in those situations.
However, this technology allows for live tracking of ships like the Viking Sky, making it easier to monitor their movements.
Accessibility
The ship has made a great effort to ensure that all passengers can enjoy their time on board. There are 2 special needs cabins on this ship, which have been modified for accessibility purposes.
These cabins provide a comfortable and convenient space for passengers with special needs.
Sister Ships
The Viking Ocean ships are virtually identical, with the same design, layout, and even color palette. This makes it easy for repeat guests to feel like they're "coming home" regardless of which ship they choose.
The first Viking Ocean ship had to get everything right, or else any problems or shortcomings would be duplicated in subsequent ships. Torstein Hagen, the founder and CEO, has a history of revolutionizing the cruise industry.

All Viking Ocean ships are logically and elegantly designed, with form following function. The use of technology throughout the ship is impressive, with interactive touchscreen monitors delivering information in a user-friendly way.
Viking Ocean ships are part of a class, which means the basic design and layout are the same. The cabins are mostly identical among these ships, but may be decorated differently.
The first ship in this class was the Viking Star, launched in 2014. The Viking Sea and Viking Sky followed in 2016, and the Viking Sun was launched in 2017, but it's no longer sailing.
Embarkation
Embarkation times on Viking Ocean vessels are staggered based on stateroom/suite categories, with higher categories getting to board earlier. This means that guests in more expensive staterooms can occupy their rooms earlier.
Guests in higher stateroom categories can embark and occupy their staterooms earlier, as was the case with our Deluxe Veranda suite, which had an embarkation time of noon.

The check-in and embarkation process on Viking Ocean vessels is very smooth and efficient, making the transition to the ship a breeze.
Viking personnel are at the airport to greet guests as soon as they exit Customs, and porters are on hand to grab luggage and escort guests to a waiting motorcoach for the transfer to the ship.
Glasses of champagne are handed to guests as they step aboard the ship, making for a warm and welcoming arrival.
