The MV Damia Desgagnés made history by becoming the first ship to receive an LNG bunkering in the Port of Saguenay, Quebec, Canada.

On June 23, 2022, the ship was refueled with liquefied natural gas, marking a significant milestone in the maritime industry.

This innovative approach to fueling ships offers a cleaner, more environmentally friendly alternative to traditional fossil fuels.

The MV Damia Desgagnés is a significant player in this shift towards more sustainable shipping practices.

Service History

Damia Desgagnés was constructed at Beşiktaş Shipyard in Yalova, Turkey with the yard number 60.

The ship was completed in March 2017 and accepted for delivery by the company on 30 March.

The vessel departed Turkey in April, taking on its first cargo in Europe before arriving in Canada in May.

On its first journey up the Saint Lawrence Seaway, departing Montreal for Nanticoke, Ontario with a load of heavy fuel, the ship ran aground on 16 June, 3 nautical miles (5.6 km; 3.5 mi) east of Iroquois, Ontario.

World First Christening

The Mia Desgagnés is a remarkable ship that marked another world first for Desgagnés. It was christened as the world's first Polar Class 7 dual-fuel oil/chemical tanker.

The ship represents a significant investment of over $50 million, with nearly $9 million dedicated to the addition of dual-fuel/LNG propulsion. This innovative feature will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The Quebec government contributed $700,000 to the cost under its program to improve transportation efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This shows the importance of government support for sustainable shipping practices.

The Mia Desgagnés was built at Besiktas shipyard in Turkey, using an original concept and specifications developed by Desgagnés. This collaboration highlights the company's commitment to innovation and expertise.

The Mia Desgagnés was originally planned to be an asphalt-bitumen twin of the Damia Desgagnés, another world-first ship in Desgagnés' fleet.

First LNG Bunkering at Port of Hamilton

The first LNG bunkering at Port of Hamilton marked a major milestone in the Great Lakes marine shipping industry. The Hamilton-Oshawa Port Authority (HOPA) partnered with REV LNG to enable marine vessels to refuel with LNG during any stopover.

The first vessel to do so was the MV Damia Desgagnés, which carried a load of asphalt and docked at Pier 22 to refuel before departing for Detroit. This new service will allow marine vessels to refuel with LNG at Hamilton Port.

HOPA said this was a major milestone in the energy evolution of the Great Lakes marine shipping industry, which was looking for new ways to reduce GHGs and advance environmental goals. The Great Lakes – St. Lawrence Seaway system is an important part of this international network.

The partnership between HOPA and REV LNG will keep HOPA at the forefront of environmental performance. Pivotal LNG also supported the project with LNG supply from the Towanda liquefaction and storage facility in Bradford County, Pennsylvania.

HOPA aims to be carbon neutral by 2025, and this offering to shipping customers will help them achieve this goal. REV LNG expects this to signal the beginning of LNG bunkering in a key marine market.
