Moín Container Terminal Enhances Maritime Operations

The Moín Container Terminal is a game-changer for maritime operations in Costa Rica. It's designed to handle the country's growing trade needs.

Located in the Limón Province, the terminal is strategically positioned to take advantage of the Panama Canal's expansion. This means it can now accommodate even larger container ships.

The terminal has a total quay length of 1,200 meters and a maximum draft of 16 meters, allowing for the safe and efficient loading and unloading of containers.

The Moín Container Terminal has seen remarkable growth since its operations began in 2018, handling over 6 million containers in just five years.

In 2019, container volumes were just over 1 million TEUs, but by 2023, this number had increased to 1.26 million TEUs.

The terminal's average number of vessels calling at the terminal each month has also increased significantly, from 12 in 2018 to over 89 in 2023.

APM Terminals Moín has focused on lifting the standard of innovation, efficiency, and providing a quality service for its customers, the development and growth of its partners, and the country.

The time taken to release cargo at the terminal is less than 4 days, a feat recognized by the Logistics and Customs Commission of the Costa Rican Chamber of Commerce.

The terminal's operations involve the efficient and timely handling of export products, such as bananas, pineapples, coffee, tubers, and melons, which make up between 80% and 85% of the terminal's operations.

The Moín Container Terminal is built on an artificial island off the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica and will cover around 80 hectares with a 1,500-meter quay and a depth of 16 meters once completed.

The terminal will be equipped with 39 electric container cranes and six Super-Post Panamax gantry cranes, capable of handling container ships of up to 8,500 TEUs.
