The Santa Ana City Council has approved a new trash and recycling pickup agreement with Republic Services, a unionized company established in Orange County. This agreement goes beyond traditional trash collection and includes a Clean City Initiative.

The agreement term is for 10 years, starting on July 1, 2022, and expiring on June 30, 2032, with options to extend for up to 36 months. This long-term commitment ensures a consistent and reliable waste management system for the city.

Republic Services had the lowest rate for multi-family residential trash service among the four companies that bid on the contract. This means that apartment and condo residents will pay less for trash collection.

The company will also provide bulky items pickup for multifamily properties – up to 40 times per year – a service that currently isn't available without paying additional fees. This is a significant improvement for residents who need to dispose of large items.

With its established recycling processing facilities nearby, Republic's trucks will require shorter trips to dump waste, limiting pollution. The company is also testing electric garbage trucks and will begin its first electric truck pilot program in Santa Ana.
