The zip lock bag with water and pennies trick is a simple yet effective way to demonstrate the concept of buoyancy and density. This trick works because the pennies are denser than the water, causing them to sink.
Using a standard zip lock bag and a handful of pennies, you can create a fun and educational experiment that's easy to set up and understand. Just fill the bag with water, add a few pennies, and seal it.
The pennies will initially sink to the bottom of the bag, but as the air is squeezed out, they will eventually rise to the surface. This is because the air is being compressed, allowing the pennies to displace the water and become buoyant.

The Experiment
We simply dropped about five pennies each into the jar and baggie, then added water.
We also decided to create a tempting scene for the local flies by setting aside a small plate of unguarded food on a picnic blanket.
Nearly any food can attract the pesky critters, but we baited our plate with a few different options including a sliced orange, cheese, some grape jelly, and fresh spinach.
It didn't take long at all for a little fly visitor to hop onto an orange slice, so we knew our bait was effective.
We set the water-filled jar and sandwich baggie on either side of the bait plate on top of the picnic blanket.
We started a stopwatch to see how long it would take for our fly friend to return, if he returned at all.
The Hack
You place a handful of coins in the bottom of a zip-lock bag. Filling it with water and sealing it is the next step.
The coins are what make this hack work, as flies don't like the colours they give off. This makes the bag an effective deterrent against flies.
Flies' compound eyes make the bag look like a "giant body of water", which is even more of a deterrent. This unique perspective on the bag's appearance makes it even more effective.

To use this hack, simply tie the bag above your back or patio door, or anywhere you expect to see flies. This will keep the pesky insects at bay.
Mums in the UK have been sharing their success with this hack on Facebook groups, with some reporting no flies for weeks. One mum even said she lives on a working farm and the flies vanished after using this hack.
