The USS Mobile was commissioned on September 20, 1969, and served as a commissioned ship for 24 years and 4 months, earning 15 awards and campaign ribbons for its service. It was decommissioned on February 25, 1994, at Long Beach, California.

The USS Mobile was extensively involved in the Vietnam War and took part in WestPac 84 and numerous other operations. In the Gulf War, it was part of an 18-ship amphibious task force that was the largest such force since the Korean War.
