Pasni Fish Harbour is a vital hub for the local fishing industry, providing a lifeline for the region's economy. Located in the Balochistan province of Pakistan, it's a key fishing port that supports the livelihoods of many families.
The harbour is strategically situated near the Arabian Sea, allowing fishermen to easily access the rich fishing grounds. Its proximity to the sea also enables the rapid transportation of fresh catch to markets.
Pasni Fish Harbour is a major source of employment for the local community, with many people involved in fishing, processing, and selling the fish. The harbour's economic importance cannot be overstated, as it brings in a significant amount of revenue for the region.
Pasni Fish Harbour
Pasni Fish Harbour was inaugurated by Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto in 1989. It was constructed at a cost of Rs. 445 million and covers an area of approximately 100,000 meters.
The harbor was built with proper facilities, including an approach channel, harbor basin, and berthing area. It also features a cargo jetty, four landing berths, market halls, and a harbor authority building.
The establishment of the harbor led to rapid growth of the fishing sector in Pasni, resulting in employment for a large number of local people.
Location and Overview
Located on the coast of Gwadar District in Balochistan, Pakistan, Pasni Fish Harbour is a bustling fishing port that plays a vital role in the country's seafood industry.
Pasni is situated near the Arabian Sea, which provides a unique opportunity for the harbour to serve as a hub for fishing and seafood processing.
The harbour is surrounded by rugged terrain and rocky cliffs, making it a picturesque yet challenging location for fishing activities.
Pasni Fish Harbour is a key source of income for local fishermen, who rely on the harbour as a base for their fishing expeditions.
Importance to the Region
Pasni Fish Harbour plays a vital role in the economy of the region, providing employment opportunities to thousands of people.
The harbour's annual fish catch is valued at over 10,000 tons, generating significant revenue for local fishermen and traders.
Pasni Fish Harbour is a major source of income for the surrounding communities, with many families relying on the harbour for their livelihood.
The harbour's location on the Arabian Sea makes it an ideal spot for fishing, with an abundance of marine life in the surrounding waters.
Challenges and Issues
The Pasni Fish Harbour has faced significant challenges since its inauguration in 1989. The harbor's maintenance has been neglected, leading to its dysfunction.
The lack of attention to the harbor's maintenance has resulted in the jetty becoming blocked due to continuous siltation by 2010.
As a result, fishermen now have to travel 132 km to the Gwadar port town to dock their boats after fishing, which is not a cost-effective solution. This has become their only alternative, and they sometimes have to spend weeks in Gwadar while fishing.
Unemployment Crisis
The unemployment crisis is a pressing issue that affects millions of people worldwide. According to recent statistics, over 180 million people are currently unemployed.
The consequences of unemployment can be severe, with many individuals struggling to make ends meet. In some countries, the unemployment rate has risen to as high as 25%.
Long-term unemployment can have a lasting impact on a person's mental and physical health. Studies have shown that individuals who are unemployed for more than a year are more likely to experience depression and anxiety.

The impact of unemployment is not limited to individuals, but also affects families and communities. In some areas, high unemployment rates have led to increased poverty and crime rates.
Many people are struggling to find stable employment due to a lack of job opportunities. In some countries, the job market has been stagnant for years, with few new jobs being created.
The unemployment crisis is a complex issue with multiple causes and effects. However, by understanding its root causes and consequences, we can work towards finding solutions to this pressing problem.
Drowned Fish Harbour
Drowned Fish Harbour is a major challenge for coastal communities.
The harbour's low-lying area makes it prone to flooding, which can have devastating effects on the local ecosystem.
Flooding in the harbour has already caused significant damage to fish habitats and disrupted the local fishing industry.
The harbour's water quality is also affected by the flooding, leading to a decrease in oxygen levels and an increase in pollutants.

This has a direct impact on the fish population, making it harder for them to survive.
The flooding in the harbour also poses a risk to human safety, particularly for those living and working in the area.
In fact, the harbour's flooding has already resulted in several evacuations and emergency responses.
Government Intervention
The Balochistan government is taking a proactive approach to revitalize the Pasni Fish Harbour, investing Rs1.454 billion in the project. This significant investment will include Rs800 million from Japanese aid.
Regular maintenance dredging is essential to keep the harbour and jetties navigable throughout the year, removing silt and garbage that can permanently choke channels and berths. Otherwise, the harbour becomes non-functional.
The project has four components, including the procurement of a new dredger, repair and extension of the existing breakwater, maintenance dredging, and consultancy and survey services. These components will cater to the berthing and developmental needs of over 3,500 fishing vessels in the Gwadar coastal district area.
Through the implementation of this project, fisheries-related infrastructure will be rehabilitated and augmented, allowing fishing vessels to operate and navigate through the harbour round the year.
