The MV Stellar Banner maritime disaster was a tragic incident that left a lasting impact on the shipping industry. The ship was carrying a cargo of coal when it encountered severe weather conditions.

The MV Stellar Banner Incident was a major maritime event that made headlines globally. The bulk carrier was refloated after being aground off the coast of Brazil for three months.

The salvage efforts took several months to remove nearly all of the 145,000 tons of iron ore and all the fuel oil on board. This massive undertaking was a testament to the determination of the salvage team.

The Stellar Banner was deemed a total loss after an initial inspection found a 25 meter long breach in the vessel's structure. The inspection revealed significant damage, but the extent of the damage was not specified.

The Brazilian Navy had a pollution response team on scene in case any pollution was released during the sinking. This precautionary measure was taken to minimize the environmental impact of the scuttling.

After removing most of the iron ore, the vessel was refloated and towed to deeper water, where it was scuttled. The scuttling was captured on dramatic video, showing the ship sinking rapidly with huge plumes of dark red iron ore fines shooting into the sky.

The ship still had at least 145,000 tons of iron ore on board when it was scuttled, despite the previous removal of some 140,000 tons. The remaining iron ore was likely a significant factor in the decision to scuttle the vessel.
