The MV Hyundai Fortune Incident was a significant maritime accident that occurred in 2004. The ship ran aground off the coast of Bangladesh, resulting in a major oil spill.

The incident happened on January 22, 2004, when the ship was traveling from Bangladesh to Singapore with a cargo of 300,000 barrels of crude oil. The oil spill caused widespread environmental damage and disrupted local fishing industries.

The incident was a major environmental disaster, with the oil spill affecting a large area of the coastline.

The MV Hyundai Fortune underwent significant repairs after its incident. The vessel was renamed Fortune and temporarily repaired for being towed to China for final repairs and refurbishing.

A major issue was discovered during the repairs - the stern tube was nearly 100 mm lower than the main engine thrust sightline. This problem was addressed with the help of Tecnitas of Bureau Veritas and BF Consultant of France.

The repairs took place at the COSCO Zhoushan Shipyard in Liuhen Dao Island, China, from 2007 to 2008. A significant amount of new steel was added, totaling 5,000 tonnes.

The ship's accommodation block was also replaced, and the hull was straightened to correct the stern tube's position.

Gulf of Aden 2006

The Gulf of Aden 2006 was a pivotal moment in the history of the MV Hyundai Fortune. On March 21, 2006, an explosion occurred below deck on the ship while it was traveling from China to Rotterdam.

The crew of 27 abandoned ship and were rescued as the fire spread. The explosion and subsequent fire destroyed over a third of the containers on board.

The damaged HYUNDAI FORTUNE was towed to China for repairs, which included installing new steel.
