A salvage tug, Coral Sea FOS, was dispatched to assist, along with a salvage and firefighting team from Europe.

The fire was eventually extinguished and the ship was towed to Port Louis, where it was berthed alongside.

The crew of 17 was rescued by the container ship Donau Trader after abandoning the ship due to the fire.

The Hansa Brandenburg was a geared container ship with a capacity of 1740 TEU.

It was operated by the German company Leonhardt & Blumberg and flew the Liberian flag.

Container Ship Catches Fire

The MV Hansa Brandenburg was on passage from Singapore to Durban when a fire broke out in one of its containers.

The fire originated in a container and quickly spread to the superstructure of the vessel.

The crew of 17 was rescued by the AMVER participating container ship Donau Trader, which happened to be in the area.

The crew was unharmed and taken to Mauritius.

The Hansa Brandenburg is a 2002-built Liberian-flagged ship, operated by German company Leonhardt & Blumberg.

The vessel has a capacity of 1740 teu.

The fire has affected the superstructure of the vessel, but the current status is unclear.

Two salvage companies, Five Oceans and SMIT Salvage, have been contracted to begin work on saving the MV Hansa Brandenburg and her cargo.

The Mauritian Coast Guard is monitoring the situation and coordinating any further action to mitigate any potential damage to the environment.

The tug Coral Sea Flos is on its way to the vessel to assist with the salvage efforts.

A sister ship of the Hansa Brandenburg, the Hansa Papenburg, is in the vicinity and will be monitoring the situation and supporting as needed.
