British Guiana Postage Stamps
Privately run packet services for mail existed in British Guiana as early as 1796.
The first postage stamps of Britain were used in Georgetown (Demerara) and Berbice, but they weren't suitable for the local postal system.
The London government established an inland postal system on July 1, 1850, but it didn't have its own stamps yet.
The postmaster in Georgetown had to get creative and had the local newspaper "Royal Gazette" print imperforate stamps, which became known as the "Cottonreels".
These early stamps were printed in black on different colors of paper, depending on the denomination.
The first issue from London finally arrived in 1852, featuring a simple typeset design with a sailing ship and the colony's motto.
However, the numbers were insufficient, and in 1856, the postmaster had to print new stamps locally, crudely typeset and imitating the design of the London stamps.
The British Guiana 1c magenta is the rarest of all stamps, with only one copy known to exist.
After that, stamps were reliably available, and new designs were issued, including a pictorial commemorative for Queen Victoria's Jubilee in 1898.
This stamp featured Mount Roraima and Kaieteur Falls, and it's a beautiful example of the colony's unique landscape.
Regular pictorial series were also introduced, depicting local scenes and industries, starting with a series in 1934.
These stamps showcase the diverse culture and economy of British Guiana, now known as Guyana.
