The JS Mikuma is a highly advanced Japanese Navy frigate designed to tackle a wide range of missions.

Its multi-mission capabilities make it an invaluable asset to the Japanese fleet.

With a length of 133 meters, the JS Mikuma is a significant addition to Japan's naval capabilities.

This new frigate is equipped with advanced sensors and communication systems, enhancing its ability to detect and respond to threats.

JS Mikuma Commissioning

The JS Mikuma was commissioned on December 16, 2022, marking a significant milestone in the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force's (JMSDF) modernization efforts.

The ship was named after the Mikuma River in Oita Prefecture, Kyushu.

JS Mikuma is the fourth ship of the Mogami-class frigates, designed to replace older, less capable destroyers and destroyer escorts.

The Mogami-class frigates are a series of Japanese multi-mission stealth frigates for the JMSDF.

The JS Mikuma has an overall length of 130 meters (426 ft 6 in), a breadth of 16 meters (52 ft 6 in), a standard displacement of 3,900 metric tons, and a full load displacement of about 5,500 metric tons.

The ship is powered by a Rolls-Royce MT30 gas turbine, offering a maximum speed of over 30 knots (56 km/h; 35 mph).

The JS Mikuma features advanced stealth capabilities, thanks to the development lessons learned from the Mitsubishi X-2 Shinshin stealth fighter technology demonstrator.

The frigate also emphasizes high-level automation, making it a valuable asset for the JMSDF.

Some of the key features of the JS Mikuma include:

  • Mk 45 gun
  • Two remote weapon stations above the bridge
  • 16-cell Mk 41 Vertical Launching System (VLS) at the bow
  • 8 anti-ship missiles
  • One SeaRAM
  • SH-60L helicopter
  • Torpedoes
  • Decoy launchers
  • Unmanned underwater vehicles (UUV), unmanned surface vehicles (USV), and sea mines

The JS Mikuma is part of the JMSDF's plan to build a total of 22 Mogami-class frigates until 2032, with many of them built to an improved standard.
