Bondi Beach Post Office

The Bondi Beach Post Office is a significant landmark in the area, having been constructed in 1922 to a design by EH Henderson of the Commonwealth Department of Works and Railways.

The building was extended in 1934 in a sympathetic style by architects H Sturtevant and C Todd, who added an additional entry to the postal hall on the Hall Street elevation.

It was officially opened with 15 staff, who started work early sorting the mail, with the official opening being 9am.

The Post Office is a great example of the Colonial/Georgian Revival Style, which was popular during the interwar period.

The building's design reflects the social importance of public buildings, as required by the Post Master General's Department.

The Bondi Post Office is one of a small group of compact, domestically scaled brick post offices in New South Wales designed by EH Henderson.

It is also one of four still operating as a post office designed between 1923 and 1926 that adopt a columned corner entry in a tight domestic cottage-form.

Here are some key features of the Bondi Beach Post Office:

  • Compact, single storied, brick building
  • Columned corner entry with Tuscan order columns and entablature
  • Three sash windows on the street facades
  • Brick plinth surrounds the façade
  • Terracotta shingle roof
